Outreach Center

The Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center builds relationships that encourage change, provide support and connect guests to the services that will help them define and realize their full potential.

During the twenty-four years that the Community Soup Kitchen has been serving the working poor, elderly, disabled and homeless individuals of Morris County, we have been consistently frustrated by how difficult it is to access necessary services for our guests.  The barriers of inadequate transportation, illiteracy, mental illness, physical disabilities, and guests’ frustration with the system have kept many of our guests from accessing services that would greatly improve the quality of their lives.

As a result, in January of 2003, the Community Soup Kitchen opened the Outreach Center to our guests, clients of local agencies, and to the general public.  The mission of the Outreach Center is to empower people by providing access to community resources and educational programs in an enriching and motivating atmosphere, while also providing opportunities for local non-profit agencies to improve coordination of services and more effectively outreach those in need.

The Outreach Center seeks to bring the providers of those services to the Community Soup Kitchen to outreach and provide services to our guests, while also building concrete collaborative relationships between our agency and other local organizations who offer services that have been difficult to connect our guests with in the past.

Current programs of the Outreach Center include:

  1. Employment Counseling
  2. Job Fairs
  3. English as a Second Language Classes
  4. Nursing Care and Consultation
  5. Health Screenings and HIV Testing
  6. Mental Health and Substance Abuse Outreach
  7. Social Service Advocacy

2008 was certainly a busy year for the Outreach Center

  • The number of meals served increased by 4,730 for a total of 53,278 -- up 9.7% from last year. Outreach Center referrals climbed to 2,847-- a 33% increase from last year. Recognizing the changing nature of our guest population, we are committed to adapting our programs to meet the most current needs of the guests.

  • A concentrated effort was made this year to expand the outreach services offered and to better facilitate the connection between our Outreach Center and our guests.

  • Arrangements were made for an outreach worker from the Morris County Sexual Assault Division of Morristown Memorial Hospital to be present twice a month in the dining room.

  • Elena Graham, our Community Outreach Coordinator, was invited to join the Planning Committee for the Immigrant Resources Network, thereby giving the CSK a voice in planning the agenda for future meetings.

  • New relationships were developed with local area camps.  Camp Johnsonburg in New Jersey offered sponsorships to their sleep-away camp for a week in August and the Morris Center YMCA awarded scholarships for two weeks to their Leadership Day Camp.  Both camping experiences were met with extremely favorable feedback and we look forward to working with them again this year.

The dramatic increase in Outreach Center referrals during 2008 demonstrates the expanding role of the Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center in our community. As we anticipate this trend to continue, the Outreach Center hours were expanded to accommodate as many guests as we could outside of dining room hours.
